How to Use

Dosage

Verpamil 80 mg: One tablet 3-4 times a day. Verpamil 200 mg prolonged-release tablet: One prolonged-release tablet 1-2 times a day.

Method

Take the tablets orally with enough liquid, such as a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the 200 mg prolonged-release tablets.

Important

Always follow your doctor's specific dosing instructions for your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, tiredness, drowsiness
  • Constipation, digestive problems, nausea
  • Itching, rashes, hives
  • Slow heart rate, too low blood pressure, heart failure, swollen ankles
RARE
  • Confusion, depression, sleep problems
  • Numbness or tingling, vision problems, ringing in the ears
  • Heart rhythm disorders, palpitations, fast heart rate
  • Flushing, dry mouth, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Muscle pain, cramps, joint pain, chest pain
  • Increased urination, impotence, irregular periods
  • Breast enlargement in men, abnormal milk secretion
  • Fainting, cardiac arrest
  • Breathing difficulties (spasm of airways or throat)
  • Intestinal blockage, gum overgrowth
  • Easy bruising, skin rashes (small red spots, photosensitivity, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome), flaky skin, sudden swelling (angioedema)
  • Hypersensitivity, tremor, nervous system symptoms, hair loss

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Verpamil if you are allergic to verapamil hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Verpamil if you have severe heart failure or very low blood pressure (below 90 mmHg systolic).
  • Do not take Verpamil if you have certain severe heart rhythm problems or conduction disorders (e.g., 2nd or 3rd degree AV block) or sick sinus syndrome without a working pacemaker.
  • Avoid grapefruit juice during Verpamil treatment, as it can increase the medicine's effects.
  • Alcohol can strengthen and prolong Verpamil's effects, so be careful with alcohol.

  • Verpamil is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless your doctor specifically prescribes it.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Be careful if you need to focus intently.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Use only in special cases. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. May exacerbate heart failure. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia, constipation, heart failure and swelling. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.2.2025)
