How to Use

Dosage

Usually 1-2 tablets three times a day. Your doctor may prescribe a different dose.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth as directed by your doctor.

Important

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight gain.
  • Tiredness.
  • Nausea.
  • Rash.
  • Hives.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Involuntary muscle twitches in the face or around the mouth.
RARE
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms.
  • Restlessness or inability to stay still.
  • Enlarged male breasts.
  • Milk production (in men or women not breastfeeding).
  • Constipation.
  • Paralyzed bowel (intestinal paralysis).
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Problems with pupils adjusting to light.
  • Low white blood cells (agranulocytosis).
  • Muscle tension disorders.
  • Clouding of the eye lens and cornea.
  • Liver inflammation with jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes).
  • Severe reaction to antipsychotics (neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Hypersensitivity reaction.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema).
  • Seizures.
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity (seen on an ECG).
  • Blood clots, such as in the veins or lungs.
  • Changes in liver function (in lab test results).
  • High blood sugar, reduced ability to handle sugar.
  • Low blood sodium, reduced urine output.
  • Decrease in platelet count (increases risk of bleeding and bruising).
  • Increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in blood.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to prochlorperazine, phenothiazines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney failure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, an adrenal gland tumor, low white blood cells, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, an underactive thyroid, muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis), heart disease, an enlarged prostate, glaucoma, or diabetes.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking blood pressure medication, or if you have had or are at risk of blood clots. Stemetil can affect blood pressure or the risk of blood clots.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 1 year of age.

  • Stemetil can affect your body's temperature regulation, especially in very cold or hot weather.
  • Avoid using Stemetil during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor for advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine can cause tiredness, vision problems, or drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
  • If you have sugar intolerance, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, as it contains lactose.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
