How to Use

Dosage

Typically, for adults, the starting dose is 2 mg once daily, which may be increased to 4 mg on the second day. Your doctor will determine the best dose for you.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will decide the exact maximum dose for you, but for many adults, it is often between 4-6 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping, feeling tired, or headache.
  • Movement problems like slow or stiff movements, tremors, or drooling.
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin, which can cause breast swelling or milk leakage, and affect sexual function in men and menstrual cycles in women.
  • Weight gain, increased or decreased appetite.
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety, or restlessness.
  • Involuntary muscle contractions or jerking movements that can affect the face, eyes, mouth, tongue, or other body parts.
  • Dizziness, blurred vision, or eye infections.
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, or shortness of breath.
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or dry mouth.
  • Muscle or joint pain, back pain, swelling in arms or legs, or fever.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and difficulty breathing.
  • Blood clots in the legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, difficulty breathing).
  • A serious condition with high fever, stiff muscles, sweating, and confusion (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Prolonged and painful erection (priapism).
  • Stroke-like symptoms such as sudden mental changes, weakness on one side, or slurred speech.
  • Diabetes or worsening diabetes, high blood sugar, or coma due to uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), problems moving eyes, or issues during cataract surgery.
  • Dangerously low white blood cell count (which fights infection) or low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), bowel blockage, or lack of bowel muscle movements.
  • Severe skin rash with blisters and peeling (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis), or jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you notice sudden changes in your mental state, or sudden weakness or numbness in your face, arms, or legs, or slurred speech, as these could be signs of a stroke.
  • Get urgent medical attention if you experience fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or confusion, as these can be signs of a serious condition.
  • If you are a man and have a prolonged, painful erection, seek immediate medical attention.
