How to Use

Dosage

The dose varies depending on your condition, usually 10–160 mg taken 2–4 times a day. Your doctor will tell you the correct dose.

Method

Take the tablets with plenty of liquid, for example, a glass of water. You can divide the tablets in half.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 320 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sleep problems, nightmares
  • Slow heart rate
  • Poor circulation in hands and feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle weakness
  • Tiredness
RARE
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Low platelet count (leading to bruising, nosebleeds)
  • Severe change in blood count (symptoms can include fever, sore throat)
  • Very low blood sugar in children, possibly with seizures
  • Hallucinations, depression, psychosis, confusion
  • Sensory disturbances, fainting, dizziness, memory problems
  • Dry eyes, vision problems
  • Worsening heart failure, heart rhythm problems
  • Low blood pressure when standing up (dizziness, fainting)
  • Shortness of breath in asthma patients
  • Hair loss, rash, psoriasis-like skin reactions, worsening psoriasis, red patches on skin
  • Changes in blood fat levels
  • Appearance or worsening of myasthenia gravis-like symptoms
  • Excessive sweating
  • Increased antinuclear antibodies in the blood
  • Headache
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis)
  • Constipation, dry mouth

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to propranolol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure, asthma, severe heart failure, a very slow pulse, certain heart rhythm problems, severe circulation problems, or an untreated tumor of the adrenal gland.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking if you have heart, kidney, or liver problems, diabetes (it can hide symptoms of low blood sugar), overactive thyroid (it can hide symptoms), psoriasis, myasthenia gravis, or other allergies.
  • Do not stop taking Propral suddenly without your doctor's permission, as this can make your condition worse.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Non-selective beta blocker. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia, orthostatism, sleep disorders and bronchial contraction. (updated 20.1.2025)
