How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children, the usual dose for brain and spinal cord scans is 0.2 ml per kg of body weight. For full body scans in adults, it's also 0.2 ml per kg.

Method

A healthcare professional will give you this medicine as an injection into a vein before your scan.

Important

You should only receive one dose of ProHance during an MRI scan. If you need another dose, there must be at least 7 days between injections.

Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea

  • Headache, changes in sensation, drowsiness, taste changes
  • Low blood pressure, hot flashes
  • Dry mouth, vomiting
  • Itching, rash, hives
  • Injection site pain, injection site reaction
  • Fatigue
  • Increased heart rate
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., throat tightness, irritated throat, difficulty breathing, chest discomfort, feeling hot, difficulty swallowing, burning sensation, swollen throat, low blood pressure)
  • Restlessness
  • Seizures, abnormal movement coordination, decreased mental performance
  • Watery eyes
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Changes in heart rhythm
  • Throat spasm, shortness of breath, runny nose, cough, breathing stops, wheezing
  • Abdominal pain, swollen tongue, itchy mouth, gum inflammation, diarrhea
  • Facial swelling
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Chest pain, fever
  • Coma
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Vasovagal reaction (common symptoms include nausea, dizziness, and heavy sweating; severe cases may involve paleness, heavy sweating, slow heart rate, and possibly loss of consciousness; other symptoms may include fear, anxiety, restlessness, weakness, and increased saliva production)
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Respiratory arrest, fluid in the lungs
  • Angioedema (symptoms include swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, and difficulty breathing)
  • Kidney failure
  • Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (causes hardening of the skin and may also affect soft tissues and internal organs)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to gadoteridol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if your kidneys do not work well or if you have recently had or will soon have a liver transplant.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had allergies, epilepsy, or a brain injury.
  • For babies under 4 weeks old and infants under 1 year old, ProHance should only be used after careful consideration by a doctor due to immature kidney function.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as ProHance should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary.

  • If you are breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor whether to continue or stop breastfeeding for 24 hours after using ProHance.
  • If you feel drowsy or unwell (e.g., nausea) after the examination, do not drive or operate machinery.
