How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your weight and condition; for adults and children over 5 years old, a loading dose (15 mg FE/kg) is usually given into a vein.

Method

The medicine is given directly into a large vein (as an infusion) or into a muscle (as an injection) in a hospital setting.

Important

For adults, the infusion speed should not exceed 150 mg FE per minute, and for children, it should not exceed 3 mg FE per kg per minute.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abnormal eye movements, dizziness, itching.
  • Mood changes, tingling and prickling sensations, clumsiness, sleepiness, headache, shaking, abnormal movements or coordination problems, slurred speech, blurred vision, taste changes.
  • Ringing in the ears, vertigo.
  • Nausea, dry mouth, vomiting.
  • Pain or reaction at the injection site.
  • Lack of energy or weakness, chills, decreased consciousness.
  • Vision problems, low blood pressure, bruising.
RARE
  • Severe rash with blistering (possibly in the mouth and tongue), fever, or flu-like symptoms (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Bruising, fever, paleness, or severe sore throat (signs of blood count changes, such as reduced red or white blood cells, or platelets).
  • Rash and fever with swollen glands, yellowing of the skin and eyes (hypersensitivity reaction, systemic lupus erythematosus).
  • Skin discoloration, swelling, or pain at the injection site, spreading down the arm to hands and fingers (Purple Glove syndrome).
  • Red skin areas with small, raised pustules, facial swelling (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis [AGEP]).
  • Rash, fever, swollen glands, increase in certain white blood cells (eosinophilia), and inflammation of internal organs (liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, and large intestine) (DRESS syndrome).
  • Confusion or severe mental illness (may indicate high blood phenytoin levels, rarely permanent brain damage).
  • Sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips, rash, or itching (hypersensitivity reaction).
  • Nervousness, confusion, abnormal or irrational thoughts.
  • Numbness or tingling in the limbs.
  • Increased or decreased reflexes.
  • Double vision, hearing loss, numbness of the tongue.
  • Rash, including mild measles-like reactions.
  • Muscle weakness, muscle twitching, muscle cramps.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to fosfenytoin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have heart rhythm problems or a rare inherited blood disorder called acute intermittent porphyria.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or heart disease, low blood pressure, kidney disease, low blood protein levels, or diabetes.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • If you are of Chinese or Asian origin and have a specific gene change, discuss the risk of severe skin reactions with your doctor.

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience swelling of your face, mouth, or throat, which can make breathing difficult.
  • This medicine may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control; use other reliable contraception methods and talk to your doctor.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy or sleepy.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are breastfeeding.
  • Severe blistering rashes, possibly with fever, can rarely occur; contact your doctor immediately if these symptoms appear.
