How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and adolescents (12 years and older) is 10-20 mg every 12 hours. Some patients may start with 5 mg to reduce side effects.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with enough liquid. Do not chew, crush, or break them, as this can cause a dangerous and potentially fatal overdose.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor has prescribed, usually twice a day. Never take tablets more often than every 8 hours.

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, and drowsiness
  • Constipation, vomiting, nausea
  • Itching
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mood and personality changes (e.g., anxiety, depression, nervousness, sleep problems, unusual thoughts, confusion)
  • Tremors
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth
  • Rash, heavy sweating
  • Unusual weakness, tiredness
  • Drowsiness (lethargy)
RARE
  • Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction)
  • Dehydration
  • Agitation, hallucinations, mood swings, strong feeling of happiness (euphoria), decreased sex drive, drug dependence
  • Memory loss, seizures, involuntary muscle contractions, unusual muscle tension, decreased pain or touch sensitivity, itching or numbness, speech problems, fainting, taste changes
  • Pupil constriction, vision problems
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (with withdrawal symptoms)
  • Blood vessel widening (vasodilation)
  • Slowed or stopped breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Stomach and bowel problems, gas, difficulty swallowing, bowel obstruction, belching
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Dry skin
  • Inability to empty bladder completely (urinary retention)
  • Erectile dysfunction, low sex hormone production
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, and feet, thirst, withdrawal symptoms, chills, needing higher doses for pain relief, feeling unwell
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Hives
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis-like reactions)
  • Increased pain sensitivity
  • Sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep)
  • Tooth decay
  • Colic-like abdominal pain or stomach discomfort
  • Problem affecting a sphincter muscle in the intestines, causing severe upper abdominal pain (Oddi's sphincter dysfunction)
  • Missed periods (amenorrhea)
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborns

Important Warnings

  • Do not use OxyContin Depot if you are allergic to oxycodone or any other ingredients, or if you have severe breathing problems like severe asthma or lung disease.
  • This medicine is not for children under 12 years of age.
  • This medicine contains oxycodone, an opioid, which can lead to dependence and addiction. Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can increase side effects and be dangerous.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy and affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel this way.

  • Avoid using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially sedatives, antidepressants, or medicines for epilepsy, as they can interact dangerously with OxyContin Depot.
  • Do not stop taking OxyContin Depot suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 24.3.2025)
