How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your health, weight, and risk of blood clots or bleeding.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you Orgaran as an injection under your skin, into a vein, or as a slow drip into a vein; it should not be injected into a muscle.

Important

Your doctor or nurse will carefully manage and monitor your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • A notable drop in blood platelets (cells that help blood clot) for those already sensitive to heparin.
  • Skin rash.
  • More bleeding than usual after surgery.
RARE
  • Bruises, pain, or bleeding where the injection was given.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Itching.
  • More bleeding or swelling with blood (hematoma) near the surgery area.
  • A drop in blood platelets because of an immune system problem.
  • Back pain, tingling, numbness or weakness in the legs, or problems with bowel or bladder control (seek medical help immediately if these occur).

Important Warnings

  • If you are allergic to danaparoid sodium or any other ingredient in Orgaran.
  • If you have had a bleeding stroke (bleeding in the brain) in the last 3 months.
  • If you have severe, uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • If you have stomach or intestinal ulcers.
  • If you have eye damage caused by diabetes.

  • If you are getting spinal or epidural anesthesia or a lumbar puncture within 24 hours while using Orgaran to prevent blood clots.
  • If you have a strong tendency to bleed, like hemophilia, or a high risk of bleeding.
  • If you have liver or kidney disease.
  • If you have a heart valve infection (bacterial endocarditis).
  • If you have bleeding that won't stop.
  • If you have central nervous system or brain damage, or if you will have spine or eye surgery.
  • If previous heparin treatment caused a serious drop in your platelet count (HIT) and tests show a similar risk with Orgaran.
  • If you are allergic to sulfites, as this can cause severe reactions, especially in people with asthma.
  • If Orgaran is planned for use during heart bypass surgery.
  • If you are having spinal or epidural anesthesia or a lumbar puncture, as specific timing recommendations for Orgaran must be followed.
