Oftan Dexa eye ointment is a medicine that helps reduce swelling, allergy, and pain in the eye, and is used for certain eye inflammations, injuries, and after eye surgery.

How to Use

Dosage

A small amount (about 1 cm) of ointment into the lower eyelid pocket 1-3 times a day.

Method

Wash your hands. Pull down your lower eyelid, then gently squeeze about 1 cm of ointment into the pocket between your eye and eyelid. Avoid touching your eye or lashes with the tube. Close your eye and blink to spread the ointment evenly.

Important

Do not use more than 3 times a day unless your doctor tells you to.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Temporary stinging or burning in the eye.
  • Temporary blurred vision right after applying the ointment.
RARE
  • Increased pressure in the eye with long-term use.
  • Sores or cloudiness on the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) with very long-term use.
  • Hormonal problems like increased body hair (especially in women), muscle weakness, purple stretch marks, high blood pressure, irregular periods, changes in body protein/calcium, slowed growth in children, and swelling or rounding of the body and face (Cushing's syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to dexamethasone or any other ingredient, or if you have eye tuberculosis, viral or fungal eye infections, open sores in your eye, or a pus-filled eye infection without antibiotic treatment.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while using this eye ointment.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other vision problems.
  • Long-term use (over two weeks) can increase eye pressure.
  • This medicine can slow down the healing of corneal injuries.

  • For pus-filled eye infections, you must also use an antibiotic medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you notice swelling or rounding of your body and face, as these can be signs of a serious condition called Cushing's syndrome, or if you are ending a long-term treatment.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to get pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
  • This eye ointment may temporarily blur your vision. Do not drive or operate machines until your vision is clear.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For temporary use. Start and continue therapy under supervision by an ophthalmologist. Do not use if fungal or viral infection is suspected. (updated 4.12.2023)
