How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right amount and how long you will receive this medicine, based on your health condition and what is being treated.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip (infusion) into a large vein, usually through a small tube or cannula placed in a central vein.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum safe daily dose based on your condition, as too much can make your blood too alkaline.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sodium bicarbonate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if your blood is already too alkaline (basic).
  • Do not use if your breathing is slow or shallow.
  • Do not use if you have unusually high sodium or unusually low potassium levels in your blood.
  • Do not use if you have lost a lot of chloride.

  • Tell your doctor if you have severe breathing problems or lung disease that makes your blood too acidic.
  • Tell your doctor if you have unusually low calcium in your blood or unusually high salt levels (hyperosmolarity).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a condition that requires you to limit sodium intake, such as heart failure, swelling, high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia (swelling and seizures during pregnancy), or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes with blood that is too acidic (diabetic ketoacidosis), have had a heart attack, or have too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis).
  • Special care is needed when giving this medicine to newborns, babies, or young children, as giving it too quickly can cause too much sodium in their blood, lower pressure in their brain fluid, and lead to bleeding in the skull (especially in premature babies).
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to get pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine. High sodium levels can be dangerous if you have pre-eclampsia during pregnancy.
