How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 10 mg. If you take propranolol or have kidney/liver problems, use 5 mg.

Method

Take Maxalt tablets by mouth with liquid as soon as a migraine starts. Do not use it to prevent an attack.

Important

Do not take more than two doses within 24 hours. Always wait at least two hours between doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tingling, headache, reduced skin sensitivity, feeling less sharp mentally, trouble sleeping.
  • Fast or uneven heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Reddening of the face (flushing).
  • An uncomfortable feeling in the throat.
  • Feeling sick (nausea), dry mouth, throwing up (vomiting), loose stools (diarrhea), stomach upset (indigestion).
  • Heavy feeling in parts of your body, neck pain, stiffness.
  • Stomach or chest pain.
RARE
  • Bad taste in your mouth.
  • Clumsy walking, dizziness (vertigo), blurry vision, shaking (tremor), fainting.
  • Feeling confused or nervous.
  • High blood pressure, feeling thirsty, hot flashes, sweating.
  • Skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema) which can cause trouble breathing or swallowing, shortness of breath.
  • Tightness in parts of your body, muscle weakness.
  • Changes in heart rhythm or rate, abnormal heart test (ECG), very fast heartbeats (tachycardia).
  • Face pain, muscle pain.
  • Wheezing (whistling sound when breathing).
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), sudden life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
  • Stroke (brain attack), especially in people with heart disease risk factors.
  • Slow heartbeat (bradycardia).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rizatriptan benzoate or any other ingredients in Maxalt.
  • Do not take if you have heart problems (e.g., heart attack, chest pain), symptoms related to your heart, or moderate to severe untreated high blood pressure.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not take if you have blocked arteries (peripheral vascular disease).

  • Do not take if you are currently using MAO inhibitors or have stopped them less than two weeks ago.
  • Do not take if you are using ergotamine-like medicines or methysergide for migraines.
  • Do not take if you are using other triptan medicines for migraine (e.g., sumatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan).
  • Taking Maxalt too often can cause chronic headaches. Talk to your doctor if this happens, as you might need to stop the medicine.
  • Maxalt can make you feel sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.
