Method

Ketanest-S is given in a hospital by a doctor or nurse as a slow injection into a vein or muscle, or as an infusion. The dose can be repeated if needed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Emergence reactions after anesthesia, such as vivid dreams, nightmares, dizziness, and restlessness.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Temporary increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Effects on breathing during anesthesia.
  • Nausea, vomiting, and increased salivation.
RARE
  • Increased body and eye movements that may look like convulsions.
  • Double vision and increased eye pressure.
  • Rash.
  • Pain and/or redness at the injection site.
  • Severe allergic reactions.
  • Irregular or slow heart rate.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Hallucinations, unease, anxiety, and confusion (disorientation of time and place).
  • Abnormal liver function test results or liver damage.

Important Warnings

  • Do not receive this medicine if you are allergic to esketamine or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure or increased pressure in your brain, as this could be dangerous for you.
  • Tell your doctor if you have chest pain during exertion or any heart condition.
  • Do not receive this medicine if you have eclampsia or pre-eclampsia (a pregnancy complication with high blood pressure).
  • Do not receive this medicine if you are taking certain medications for inducing labor (xanthine derivatives or ergotamine).

  • After anesthesia, you will need someone to take you home, and you should not drink alcohol or drive for 24 hours.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a weak heart, untreated high blood pressure, an eye condition, are under the influence of alcohol, have mental health issues, an overactive thyroid, liver disease, or have a history of drug abuse.
