Curosurf is used to treat premature babies who have or are at risk of having serious breathing problems called Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS).

How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 1.25 to 2.5 ml per kg of body weight (100-200 mg/kg), given directly into the baby's lungs. Extra doses of 1.25 ml/kg (100 mg/kg) may be given 6 to 12 hours after the first dose, and then again after another 12 hours if needed.

Method

This medicine is given by a trained healthcare professional directly into the baby's lungs through a breathing tube. The bottle is warmed to room temperature and gently turned upside down to mix, not shaken.

Important

The maximum total dose per day is 3.75 to 5.0 ml per kg of body weight (300-400 mg/kg).

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Sepsis (serious infection)
  • Bleeding inside the head
  • Slow heart rate
  • Low blood pressure
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Collapsed lung (air in chest cavity)
  • Bleeding from the lungs
  • Too much oxygen
  • Bluish skin in newborns (due to lack of oxygen)
  • Pauses in breathing
  • Lowered oxygen levels in blood
  • Abnormal brain activity (EEG)
  • Problems with the breathing tube

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Curosurf if the baby is allergic to pig lung lipids or proteins, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • This medicine has not been studied in premature babies with kidney or liver problems.
  • Curosurf must only be given by trained healthcare professionals experienced in treating premature babies.
