How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your type of cancer and general health. For adults who have not received prior cancer treatment and have normal kidney function, the usual dose is 400 mg per square meter of body surface area.

Method

This medicine will be given to you by healthcare staff. It is given as a drip (infusion) directly into a vein, usually once a month, and typically lasts up to one hour.

Important

This medicine is not a daily medication. Your doctor will determine the exact dose and schedule according to your cancer treatment plan. There is usually a break of at least four weeks between treatment cycles.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in blood cells, such as low white blood cells, red blood cells (anemia), or platelets.
  • Stomach pain, feeling sick (nausea), or throwing up (vomiting).
  • Abnormal kidney and/or liver test results in blood.
  • Low levels of minerals in your blood, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, or magnesium.
  • Infections, which can sometimes be serious.
  • Allergic reactions, such as skin rash, hives, itching, fever, or redness.
  • Hair loss and skin changes.
  • Bleeding, which can sometimes be serious.
  • Nerve problems, such as numbness, tingling, weak reflexes, changes in sensation or taste.
  • Vision problems (rarely complete loss of sight) or hearing problems (may be worse if you've had cisplatin before).
  • Heart and blood vessel problems.
  • Breathing problems, like difficulty breathing or lung disease.
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or irritation of the gut lining.
  • Muscle and joint problems.
  • Problems with kidneys, urinary tract, or reproductive organs.
  • Feeling weak or tired.
  • Changes in blood test values, such as high bilirubin, creatinine, or urate levels.
RARE
  • Cancer that appears later in life due to the treatment.
  • Severe blood problems, such as bone marrow not working well, fever from low white blood cells, or a specific kidney issue called hemolytic-uremic syndrome.
  • Dehydration, loss of appetite, or low sodium in the blood.
  • Stroke (a brain attack) or blood clots, which can be life-threatening.
  • Changes in blood pressure or heart failure.
  • Sores in the mouth, or skin reactions like redness, hives, or itching at the injection site.
  • Tissue death or medicine leaking out of the vein at the injection site.
  • Feeling generally unwell, or severe liver problems.
  • Leukemia (a type of blood cancer).
  • Nervous system problems like headache, mental changes, seizures, vision problems, or optic nerve inflammation (which can lead to vision loss).
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or pneumonia (lung inflammation).
  • Muscle cramps, muscle weakness, confusion, or irregular heartbeat.
  • Kidney failure or abnormal blood test results due to fast breakdown of cancer cells (tumor lysis syndrome).
  • Chest pain, which could be a sign of a severe allergic reaction (Kounis syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to carboplatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe bone marrow problems or a tumor that is bleeding.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney problems, unless your doctor has specifically agreed.
  • Avoid yellow fever vaccine and live virus vaccines during treatment.
  • This medicine must only be given under the supervision of a cancer doctor in specialized units.

  • Your kidney function, blood counts, liver function, and nervous system will be checked regularly before and during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have headache, mental changes, seizures, blurry vision, or vision loss. Also, report fever or chills, as these can be signs of infection.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Women who can get pregnant must use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 6 months after. Men must use effective birth control and should not father children during treatment and for at least 3 months after.
  • This medicine can cause nausea, vomiting, vision problems, and hearing loss, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines.
