How to Use

Dosage

The dose is individualized and should be given as an intravenous infusion after being diluted, preferably in carbohydrate solutions.

Method

This medicine is given as an intravenous infusion (into a vein). It must always be diluted before use.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose for severe magnesium deficiency is typically 30-40 mmol of magnesium per day until magnesium levels in the blood return to normal.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Lethargy (feeling very tired) and weakness, including decreased deep tendon reflexes.
  • Heart rhythm problems and changes in the heart's electrical activity (seen on an ECG), such as a prolonged P-R interval or widened QRS complex.
  • Drowsiness leading to coma, muscle paralysis, and eventually breathing and heart stopping.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to magnesium sulfate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Use with caution if you have kidney problems, heart failure, or heart rhythm issues. Your doctor or nurse will check your magnesium levels regularly.
  • This medicine can increase the risk of inflammation and blood clots in the vein where it's infused.
  • Magnesium can strengthen the effects of muscle relaxants and medicines that make you drowsy or calm.
  • Patients taking digitalis glycosides (like digoxin) are more sensitive to high magnesium levels.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including ammonium chloride, diuretics (water pills), corticosteroids, insulin, and glucose infusions, as they can affect magnesium levels.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or nurse for advice before using this medicine.
